march2026: IRUKANDJI JELLYFISH
irukandji jellyfish is a very small, very venomous box jellyfish. for a long time it was believed the carukia barnesi is the only irukandji jellyfish, but later it turned out, they actually have many other close relatives.
unlike most jellyfish, the irukandji doesn’t only have stinging cells on their 4 tentacles, but also all over their bells, this combined with their tiny size and see-through mesoglea makes them particularly hard to spot and also very dangerous.
the aforementioned irukandji syndrome is created by the jelly’s venom; the sting at first is only moderately irritating, the actual symptoms of the condition only begin to show 5-120 minutes after the sting. the syndrome can cause muscle cramps, abdominal and back pain, nausea, anxiety, vomiting, etc; the syndrome in severe cases can cause heart failure or cerebral hemorrhage; but most often the victims can survive the sting after getting treated in a hospital.
