This strategy earned this species the nickname: "alarm jelly".

november2023: MOON-JELLYFISH

Moon jellies along with several other types of jellyfish are the prey of lots of predators. They have little nutritinal value so the carnivores must eat hundreds of them every day. That's why turtles or other sea creatures hunting for jellyfish might end up suffocating because of a plastic bag wrapped around their head.

The coastal waters of the northeastern Atlantic are rife with a glistering blob with a symmetrical pattern on its bells, and this notorious lurker of the sea is none other than the compass jellyfish. There is a parasite that often likes to choose this type of jellyfish as their host, but even this couldn’t really reduce the overpopulation of the species, which is caused by global warming.

may2025: SEA GOOSEBERRY

the sea gooseberry is a genus of comb jelly. it uses the colloblasts found on its tentacles to release an adhesive substance to trap its prey.

october2025: COPULA SIVICKISI

this is a very small nocturnal genus of box jelly. During the day the copula sivickisi attaches itself to a sympathetic coral or stone with the adhesive pads on its bell. It lays low and completely flat (with the tentacles folded under its belt) until the sun goes down, when the copula sivickisi comes out of its daytime resort to feed. this jelly’s hunting strategy consists of it rising to the surface then starting to sink with the tentacles extended like a fishing net.
Unlike most jellyfish the copula sivickisi has an actual mating ritual.
